an airport in Essex , north-east of London. It was a very small airport until the 1990s, when it became London’s third airport. An impressive modern airport building, designed by Norman Foster , was opened in 1991. With the growth of low-cost airlines such as Ryanair which use Stansted, the airport expanded to become Britain’s fourth largest airport.
