( Elwyn Brooks White 1899–1985)

a US author known for his humorous pieces about American society in The New Yorker magazine. He received a special Pulitzer Prize in 1978. His books included Is Sex Necessary? (1929), written with James Thurber , and the children’s book Charlotte’s Web (1952). His introduction to the art of writing, The Elements of Style , first published in 1959, is a standard book in US schools.

II . Gilbert White

(1720–93)

an English naturalist (= a person who studies animals, birds, plants, etc.). He spent most of his life working as an assistant to a Church of England priest in Selborne, a village near Winchester (1) in southern England, and wrote in great detail about the natural life of the countryside there. His best-known work is The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne (1789).
