X CERTIFICATE

Meaning of X CERTIFICATE in English

a label formerly given to certain cinema films in Britain by the British Board of Film Censors (now called the British Board of Film Classification ). Films were given an X certificate if they were considered to be not suitable for people under 18, usually because they contained violence, sex or bad language. In 1982, the label ‘X certificate’ was changed to ‘18’, but people still sometimes use the old name informally.
