( in the US ) a piece of yellow ribbon used as a sign to show that people, especially those in the armed forces, are not forgotten while they are away from home. Yellow ribbons are often tied round trees. The practice began during the Vietnam War and was later used during the Iranian hostage crisis , the Gulf War , and the war in Iraq. Tie A Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree was a very popular song in 1973.
