a traditional story about a boy and girl who go to live with their wicked uncle after their father dies. He pays two men to kill them, so that he can steal their property. However, one of the men feels sorry for the children, so he kills his partner and leaves them in a wood. They die and a bird covers them with leaves. Soon afterwards, the uncle’s sons also die, and then he loses his property and dies himself, in prison. The story is often performed as a pantomime , when it is given a happy ending.
