a popular British television series, first broadcast in 1983, about the British in India just before it became an independent country. The series was adapted from the Raj Quartet novels of Paul Scott . The phrase ‘the jewel in the crown’ was formerly used to describe India’s place in the British Empire, and is used today to refer to something of great value among other valuable things:

Their new goalkeeper is the jewel in Newcastle’s crown.
