a large square in central London, England. It was created in 1830–41 and named in honour of Lord Nelson’s victory at the Battle of Trafalgar . In the centre of the square is Nelson’s Column and on one side of it is the National Gallery . It is one of London’s most popular tourist attractions. It is also a place where political protests and other demonstrations are often held and very large numbers of people gather there every year to celebrate New Year .
