a dividend paid in additional shares rather than in cash
eg: on a 5% stock dividend , the holder of 100 shares would receive an additional 5 shares without cost.
Note: Both stock dividend and stock split is used to reduce the stock price and keep the price within an optimal trading range(not excessively high).
