A source of electromagnetic radiation such that (a) the source is so distant from a point of observation or measurement of the radiation that the wavefront of the radiation is a planar rather than a curved surface, regardless of the shape of the source, (b) the size or shape of the source has no influence on the shape of the wavefront at the point of observation or measurement, and (c) the source need not necessarily radiate with equal radiance in all directions.
