Italian Galleria Nazionale D'arte Moderna, in Rome, important collection devoted to Italian artists and forming a full survey of 19th- and 20th-century Italian art. The museum was begun in 1883 and moved to its present site in 1911. The collection is enormous, with early examples from the Neoclassical period, including some fine portraits, through the contemporary period. An entire room is devoted to the Tuscan group of painters known as the Macchiaioli.
