Dutch Noordzeekanaal, waterway in The Netherlands that extends in an east-west direction from Amsterdam to IJmuiden on the North Sea coast. Navigable by oceangoing vessels, the canal is 15 miles (24 km) long, 49 feet (15 m) deep, and 771 feet (235 m) wide. Built between 1865 and 1876, it gave Amsterdam access to the sea and made that city a major port. The sea locks at IJmuiden were destroyed during World War II but later rebuilt.
