a comedy play (1599) by Shakespeare about the family and friends of a duke who are forced to live in the Forest of Arden when the duke’s brother, Frederick, takes his land. Rosalind, the duke’s daughter, disguises herself as a boy to be with the man she loves, Orlando. Her friend, Frederick’s daughter, falls in love with Orlando’s brother. They reveal who they really are, and the two couples get married. As well as the love story between the central characters, much of the comedy in the play comes from minor characters, including Touchstone and Jaques.
