KABWE MAN

Meaning of KABWE MAN in English

originally called Rhodesian Man, also called Broken Hill Man, extinct human being known from fossil remains (almost complete skull, maxillary fragment, sacrum, portions of pelvis and limb bones), found at Broken Hill, Northern Rhodesia (now Kabwe, Zambia), in the 1920s. Despite past disagreement about the classification of these specimens, they are now usually attributed to the early archaic Homo sapiens subspecies H. sapiens rhodesiensis and are thought to be 150,000250,000 years old. The skull is massive and flattened in profile, the browridges are very large and continuous across the nasal bridge; there is a large occipital torus, an inflated maxilla, and a very large palate. The cranial capacity and limb bones are indistinguishable from those of modern humans. In 1953 at Saldanha Bay, Hopefield, S.Af., a second skull of the Kabwe type was found with Acheulean tools and animal remains. This skull is thought to be 200,000400,000 years old.
