U.S. statesman.

A cousin of Charles C. Pinckney and Thomas Pinckney , he fought in the American Revolution . From 1784 to 1787 he served in the Continental Congress, where he was instrumental in calling for the Constitutional Convention . As a delegate to the convention from South Carolina, he proposed numerous provisions that were incorporated in the final draft of the Constitution of the United States . He helped write the South Carolina constitution and was also governor of the state (1789–92, 1796–98, 1806–08). He served in the U.S. Senate from 1798 to 1801 and as minister to Spain from 1801 to 1805.
