Despite the treaty signed by his father, Charles VI , which excluded his succession, Charles assumed the title of king on his father's death. In 1429, with the aid of Joan of Arc , he raised the siege of Orléans. He drove the English from France (1436) and gradually recovered French lands, ending the Hundred Years' War . His financial and military reforms increased the power of the monarchy.
