SAINTE-BEUVE, CHARLES-AUGUSTIN

born Dec. 23, 1804, Boulogne, France died Oct. 13, 1869, Paris French literary historian and critic, noted for applying historical frames of reference to contemporary writing. His studies of French literature from the Renaissance to the 19th century constitute a great compendium of detailed information. Additional reading Harold Nicolson, Sainte-Beuve (1957, reprinted 1978), is a biography. A.G. Lehmann, Sainte-Beuve: A Portrait of the Critic, 18041842 (1962), based on recent research, is a study of the critic in the world of the ideas and letters of his time. Richard M. Chadbourne, Charles-Augustin Sainte-Beuve (1977), provides an introduction to his works.
